An autobiographical work in which Hideo Azuma tells the story of his inability to cope with the pressures of his job as a mangaka and of his exeriences with alcoholism. The work is split into three sections, each of which details one of Azuma's breakdowns. The first section (Walking At Night) is set in 1989 when Azuma suddenly walked out on both his job and his family and became homeless for the first time. Much of this section is given over to describing the practicalities of eating, sleeping, and killing time whilst homeless. The second section (Walking Around Town) covers a similar set of events in 1992 but this time Azuma managed to find labouring work as a gas pipe layer after a period of living rough. This section also looks back over Azuma's career and describes the pressures he worked under in the 1970s and 80s. Two years after the famous author Uro vanished, his last manuscript is found at the house of competing author Otogai, who seems obsessed with (or is it possessed by?) his supposedly-dead rival. By a strange turn of events, three acquaintances; an illustrator, an editor and a stage performer, end up investigating Otogai's odd behaviour. They discover that the writer's garden appears to be haunted by a mysterious camellia bush...and camellia was Uro's favourite flower.

And where a Host has betrayed his Machine, you are sure to find a member of the mysterious Gari family, wielders and hunters of Machines, in the ensuing carnage…So it was justifiable when the Gari family was dispatched to Shakunage High School to covertly investigate a brutal murder perpetrated by the spindly hands of a Machine… But it wasn’t so justifiable when Hanare Shizuma, a youth with an agenda of his own, enrolls at the High School soon thereafter, hell-bent on conducting his own investigation – and soon meets the head of the family of hunters, shockingly enough, a girl his own age.
