In the recesses of mountain... there's a bus stop at outskirts of a village, it's called "Hinamizawa bus stop". Rika, a female high-school student, together with her junior, Mion visit this place. Twisted relationships that are concerned with the dam construction in Hinamizawa, and the stories of the curse of "Oyashiro-sama" that takes root in this area. What waiting for them is a tragedy, or else...?

The story is set in a middle school in Shishibone city. Tomohiro Miyajima, the main character of the story, and his group of friends are busy studying for an exam. One day, in search for a thrilling mystery as well as easy money, they take several donation boxes and fabricate a curse to scare everyone: “Ohone-sama’s curse”. After scrawling 骨 (bone) all over the chalkboards and spreading rumors of the curse, the donation boxes are quickly filled and the curse becomes a major legend of the school. Of course, only Tomohiro and his friends knew the curse was fake. It wasn’t possible for anything to happen.

In 1986, eleven members of the Ushiromiya family and several of their servants were trapped and mysteriously murdered on Rokkenjima, which the Golden Witch Beatrice claims to be responsible for. While Battler Ushiromiya is unable to defeat her and explain how the murders occurred without magic, he refuses to acknowledge Beatrice, forcing their game to continue with higher stakes.As the events on Rokkenjima are begin again, Eva Ushiromiya succeeds in solving the Epitaph of the Golden Witch in order to become the head of the Ushiromiya family and inherit the family's massive fortune. However, a phantom of Eva's dark side emerges and uncontrollably begins to wreck havoc on the island as Beatrice's successor. 

Now that Beatrice has become a shadow of her former self, Battler has to fight against Lamdbadelta, Bernkastel and Bernkastel's piece called Erika to save her. 

Now that Battler's found the truth, he's become the next game master. In order to prove to Bernkastel and Lambdadelta that he understands all of Beatrice's previous tricks, he's built a game board of his own and now has to face off against Erika once again. 

This episode features a new detective, a man called Willard H. Wright, who will uncover several truths about Rokkenjima's murder mystery.We will also get to know Lion Ushiromiya, a mysterious new member of the Ushiromiya family.

In 1986, between October 4th and 5th, members of the Ushiromiya family gather on the secluded island of Rokkenjima to discuss the division of the family's massive fortune upon the impending death of the family's head, Kinzo.However, when a typhoon traps the eighteen people present on the island, six people are mysteriously murdered. In Fall 1986, Battler Ushiromiya and eleven of his family members are reunited on Rokkenjima for the purpose of discussing how the head of the family's fortune will be divided upon his impending death. When a typhoon hits the island, everyone is trapped and murdered supposedly by the Golden Witch in her efforts to revive herself.

In 1998, Battler Ushiromiya's younger sister Ange has lived a miserable life being raised by her Aunt Eva, the only survivor of the murders on Rokkenjima. Bullied and unhappy, Ange finds solace in the diary of her cousin Maria and the world of magic until she rejects its existence. Solution to Watanagashi-hen. Meakashi-hen consists of the events of Watanagashi-hen told from the perspective of Shion Sonozaki, with only a few minor variations. In this chapter, the audience sees the true reason for the criminal's murderous actions in Watanagashi-hen — a lost love. The first hints of that which ties together the arcs are given.

Himatsubushi-hen is both a direct prequel and a direct sequel to Tatarigoroshi-hen. In contrast to the first three chapters, this chapter is shown through the eyes of Mamoru Akasaka, a young police investigator from Tokyo who comes to Hinamizawa in order to investigate a kidnapping of a politician's grandchild. Soon, he too becomes implicated into the mysteries of Hinamizawa. This chapter focuses on Rika Furude as being the key part of the mystery.

Hirukowashi-hen is based on Higurashi Daybreak. The main characters are Keiichi Maebara and Rika Furude, and this story is set in a parallel world. One day, Rena accidentally swallows something in her mouth during her usual treasure hunting. According to Rika, the seal of the sacred "Fuwarazu Magatama" pairs were broken and Rena must have accidentally swallowed one of them. The magatama holds mysterious magical powers in which a person that has the red magatama will blindly fall in love with anyone with the white magatama.

This chapter introduces the player to the world of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The player is shown the simple rural life of Hinamizawa, the after-school club activities, and the friendships of the main characters. However, things take a turn for the sinister after the Watanagashi Festival, when Keiichi discovers what his new friends have been concealing from him. This chapter implies that Rena Ryugu is the villain.

In Onisarashi-hen, a former resident of Hinamizawa named Natsumi is introduced, and her life after the Hinamizawa disaster is explored.

A year had passed since Natsumi's family moved to this city. Natsumi became acquainted with her new life, surrounded by friends as they went home together peacefully every day.
However, the news streamed through the television one day would change her fate substantially. A toxic gas disaster had occurred at a rural village. Furthermore, the village that got caught in the disaster was the one that Natsumi's family used to live in. Shocked by the incident, Natsumi's grandmother told her "this is Oyashiro-sama's curse'. What is this "Oyashiro-sama's curse" that grandmother is speaking of...?
The event marked the beginning of grandmother's eccentric behavior. A dissonant tone within the family indeed. As the calmness becomes concealed with each passing day, the uncertainties in Natsumi's life begin to appear...

Tatarigoroshi-hen is longer than the previous two chapters, and it is considered to be the most depressing and confusing. Keiichi attempts to help out a friend with drastic measures, but as more and more people die, it's clear he is not the only one involved in this. This time, the spotlight shines on Satoko Hojo as being the "victim". Despite good (though misled) intentions, Keiichi Maebara is believed by some of the others to be a villain in this chapter.

Solution to Onikakushi-hen. Unlike Meakashi-hen, Tsumihoroboshi-hen's story is drastically different from the plot of its Question arc. In Tsumihoroboshi-hen, Rena experiences a situation similar to Keiichi's in Onikakushi-hen, as she makes a terrible mistake and becomes distrustful of her former friends. It is the first chapter with a (seemingly) happy ending, although some tips reveal a sinister twist.

One day, a male teacher's body was found in the school swimming pool and the first discoverer, Kosaka Mizuho, is summoned to the chairman's office to report the details. Shion hears rumors about how Mizuho's grandmother is after Mizuho's life and the girl is taking refuge in the school, so Shion approaches the aloof Mizuho.

By this chapter, the player should have an overall idea of how life in Hinamizawa is like. Once again, this chapter begins innocently, with the Watanagashi Festival again marking the start of the sinister events in Hinamizawa. An ancient curse strikes, and a pair of sisters are not what they seem. Shion Sonozaki makes her first appearance in this chapter, while Mion Sonozaki is portrayed as the villain.

This chapter is an epilogue of one of the "possible outcomes" of Tsumihoroboshi-hen, in which Rena burned the school and killed Mion and her friends. Many years later, in 2006, the lock has been lifted and a group of five meet by coincidence, one of them claiming to be Mion, and get dragged into the supernatural aspects of the "Village of the Dead".

Fall 1986...in Rokkenjima, a private island owned by Kinzou Ushiromiya, eleven of his relatives arrive for a family reunion.
