Everything was kill to survive, kill to survive. Then people started acting smart and making laws. The laws kept them from doing pretty much everything they wanted to do. Beasts, on the other hand, still have no laws, or etiquette. I predict the day will come when an almost mutant breed of humans will appear, sinking to the level of beasts for freedom... Here, I will call them "Vampires..."

Vampires marked an especially important stage in the progess of Rock Holmes, one of Tezuka’s longest-running characters, who appeared here for the first time in a charismatic villain role as Makube Rokuro. Vampires is certainly not as mature a work as some of Tezuka’s later social commentaries, but a story of the fight for the right to do evil is certainly a far cry from Astro Boy’s quest to bring about friendship between humans and robots.

He kills anyone who gets in his way whether they be a complete stranger or even the client that hired him in the first place. He meets a man named Iwanishi after one of his jobs goes bad. Iwanishi nicknames him Semi (Cicada) because he apparently talks too much and offers to become his manager, handling the business side of assassination. But it seems like Iwanishi has some secret agenda Semi isn’t aware of.

One night, he makes a wish for friendship on a falling star. Shortly after, he finds a strange note left at the door of the mall. It says, "within a year, you'll go mad and die." After this, his solitary life begins to change--some ways for the better, and some for the worse. The girl's soul, lacking a fully grown spirit, could not reincarnate, and as such was forced to wander the world.
